Thick protective or thin amorphous phosphate coatings can be obtained on steel. Protective films from hot solutions after impregnation acquire high anti-corrosion and extreme pressure properties. Amorphous ones act as a primer for painting. They are thinner than protective ones and can be applied from special cold solutions. However, by themselves they are not able to protect steel from corrosion in aggressive conditions.
